Red Squirrel

Description

Red Squirrel is an emulator of Arm based Acorn machines for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP

Red Squirrel has grown from my first attempt at emulating one of the early Arm2 based acorn machines written mainly to learn some win32/DirectX and partly for nostalgia.

This was going to be a pure Archimedes a440/1 (my first Acorn machine) emulator but I don't have specs on some of the older chips so I implemented a slow A5000. It has grown over the years to emulate all the way up to a StrongArm RiscPC albeit rather slowly. There is now a commercial version of RedSquirrel called VirtualAcorn which runs significantly faster due to it's JIT compiling Arm technology.

Red Squirrel has the following main features:

  • Runs in a window, or full screen for a more authentic feel.
  • 1/2/4/8/16/32 bit video support up to 1600 by 1200 (depending on model)
  • Full 8 channel 8/16 bit sound support (depending on model)
  • Access to the windows filesystem from within the emulator
  • Reads/writes floppy images (see the links page on how to make/get floppy images)
  • Supports up to 256Mb ram (depending on model)
  • Third party plugin support

Note: To use the emulator you will need your own copies of the system roms.
